Arachne, 2013-14, Gina Kalabishis

Pastel on velour paper, 70cm x 50cm
Provenance: Flinders Lane Gallery, Melbourne.

Melbourne based painter and digital artist Gina Kalabishis uses her work to explore the feeling of love. Moody and subdued colours coalesce in her still lifes which elicit feelings of somberness, mystery and warmth. Her latest works are concerned with the environmental concerns of the present and into the future. She has been the finalist in and recipient of multiple awards, and named as the Artist in Residence at the G Art Creative Residency, in Provenance, France and the Umbi Gumbi Art in Residence in New South Wales (1).

Arachne was painted by Kalabishis as part of the collection, Breath. The collection was conceived and developed during Kalabishis’ time as resident at the Harry Brooks Allen Anatomy Museum at the University of Melbourne. By combining still life with anatomical observations and the tradition of Ikebana, she explores the personal connection of life, death and disease - a quiet and sensual beauty emerging from a collection of bones.
