Djapu artist, Barayuwa Mununggurr lives and works in Yirrkala in the Northern Territory. He designs he paints belong to both his Djapu country as well as the designs of his mother’s homeland, Yarrinya. As well as painting, Barayuwa makes yidaki, galpu (spearthrowers), gara (spears) and bilma (clapsticks) (1).
From the authenticity certificate: Barayuwa has painted his mother’s Munyuku clan’s design, inspired by her brother, the late ritual specialist and artist Dula Nurruwutthun. It is associated with the ancestral events relating to the death of the ancestral whale called Mirinyunu on the beaches of the Munyuku saltwater estate of Yarrinya within Blue Mud Bay.
