Coast to Coast, 2014, Neil Frazer

Acrylic on canvas, 153cm x 213cm
Provenance: Martin Browne Contemporary, Sydney.

Neil Frazer is recognised for high large scale, figurative and abstract canvases. He has been exhibiting extensively in Australia and New Zealand for four decades. Most important to Frazer, more so than the style and treatment of his works, are the materials he uses and the actual process of painting. Since 2005 he has been committed to painting transcendent landscapes, and has been the recipient of a number of awards, including the 1992 Francis Hodgkins Fellowship at the University of Otago (1).

Coast to Coast is part of Frazer’s Breaker collection. Consisting of 30 paintings, on his signature large canvases continues his exploration of New South Wale’s coastline and cliff faces. Applying layers and layers of paint, with thick brushstrokes, his works evoke the rich movement of ocean and land. 'I'm a very physical type of person and I hope in some way that the physicality of my work mirrors the energy evident in the natural world,' he says. ‘Painting to me is about transferring the energy from the body onto the picture.’ (2).
