Hilary Tjapaltjarri was born at Mintjilpirri, south west of Kintore in the Northern Territory. He spent much of his life working in this area and Haasts Bluff as a stockman, travelling the country. Tjapaltjarri was first interested in painting in the 1970s when he visited the Papunya Tula Artists, but only began painting in the mid-1980s when he started working with the group. His work tells the stories of the Dreamtime, particularly the Snake Dreaming, stories he learnt from his father, along with sacred sites in his ancestral lands.
