Jilamara, 2016, Jane Margaret Tipuamantumirri
Ochre on canvas, 30cm x 80cm
Provenance: Tiwi Art at Darwin Art Fair, Darwin.
Jane Margaret Tipuamantumirri lives in Pirlangimpi along with her two sisters Pamela and Simplicia, and has worked as an artist both on Bathurst Island and at Munupi. She shares a love to music, dancing and painting as a way to share her cultural stories. Tipuamantumirri’s works are deeply thought out and she continues to paint in the Tiwi traditional style of cross hatching and dot work in ochres (1).
From the authenticity certificate: All jilamara (design) is originally drawn from the body painting which accompanied the pukumani (funeral) and kulama (initiation/yam) ceremonies. An individual design and aesthetic is highly valued by Tiwi artists and is representative of their person interpretation of the traditional Tiwi design.
