Jilamara, Michelle Woody
Ochre on linen, 30cm x 80cm
Provenance: Tiwi Art at Darwin Art Fair, Darwin.
Michelle Woody is an executive committee member of Jilamara Arts & Crafts Association and was president in 2017 and 2018. She has been painting at the Association since 2012. Woody paints on canvas and has been developing her own designs to share the stories of Japarra (the moon man), and Japalinga (the stars), bush food and hunting. She also likes to paint Tiwi bush medicine and winga (the sea) surrounding her home at Milikapiti (1).
From the authenticity certificate: All jilamara (design) is originally drawn from the body painting which accompanied the pukumani (funeral) and kulama (initiation/yam) ceremonies. An individual design and aesthetic is highly valued by Tiwi artists and is representative of their person interpretation of the traditional Tiwi design.
