Senior Pitjantjatjara artist Maringka Baker, lives in the remote community of Kanpi, 100kms east of the WA, SA and NT tri-state border. She has a deep connection to country and a spiritual connection with the land, and paints the sacred Dreaming stories of her family. These powerful links to the desert are expressed with beauty and integrity in her canvas paintings. She was selected to participate in the ‘National Indigenous Art Triennial 07 - Culture Warriors’ (1).

'Kata Ala is my country near Irrunytju in Western Australia. Tjukurpa taut (there are many creation stories) which cross over close to this place. Minyma mutu mutu, nyii nyii tjuta (the creation story for all the small bird women, zebra finches) and the man wait Nyiiru (from the Seven Sister’s Tjukurpa) is close by and Wait Kutajara, the two serpent men from Pukara came here… At Kata Ala there are three places where we dig to find water just below the surface. I spent a lot of time in this country when I was a child.’
