Panel 7, 2017, Alesandro Ljubicic
Oil and resin on linen mounted to panel, 30cm x 25cm
Provenance: Scott Livesey Galleries, Melbourne.
Alesandro Ljubicic was born in central Bosnia and Herzegovina before moving to Australia to study at the National Art School. As a young art student, he founded The Sydney Art School to help gain access to art supplies for his work. Known for his large scale flower works and his smaller canvases of built up layers of paint with his signature thick brushstrokes.
Dense layers of colour and oil paint build up into sculptural and textural canvases in Ljubicic’s work, exploring the effects of layering paint. Brushstrokes and palette knife marks are clearly evident, manoeuvring and scooping the oil paint into waves of different colours. The paint is applied so thickly, that the pieces can take months to dry completely (1).
