Sir Sidney Nolan was one of Australia’s most significant modern artists, best known for his depictions of the history and mythology of bush life in Australia. His paintings, often rich in colour, striking in composition and deliberately awkward in technique, represent Australian stories of loss, failure and capture, featuring iconic figures in Australian history. Nolan’s paintings of the Kelly Gang contributed to the development of the mythological image of Ned Kelly as a symbol of outlaw identity. Nolan’s works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, the Tate Gallery in London, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
