Roundup of the Tou-Tou Boys, 2019, Jacob Stengle

Oil on linen 76cm x 102cm
Provenance: Salon de Refusés, Darwin.
Exhibited: Salon de Refusés, Darwin 2019.

Jacob Stengle primarily paints joyful and humorous memories despite the pain of many of his life experiences, but he does explore deep personal experiences, cultural identity, Stolen Generations, and explorations into European visual art appreciation.. ‘Many of my paintings depict happy times in the home, where we were always using crayons and pencils etc.’ Stengle was born in Renmark in to a Ngurrindjeri mother and Czech-slovanian father. His works combine his two worlds, and he uses his art to search for his heritage and place in the world, by splashing colour across the canvas in a range of mediums (1).

Artist Statement

'This is part of the story I've been painting about my time in the Colebrook Home. Me and other kids were sent there in Adelaide. We grew up there, without our parents. We had to make our own way, creating a world with our imaginations. I’m still doing it.'
