Screenprinter Samuel Tupou uses his work to respond to his Tongan and Polynesian heritage. His works incorporate designs traditionally used in Pacific Island Tapa cloth, along with iconography from video games and geometric patterns. Tupou often builds his prints from family photos to situate the pieces in time and place. The photograph’s original details and nuances are removed leaving the viewer with a series of colour structures which when pieced together allude to the original image. The works use proximity and distance to play with the viewers perception (1).
