Fires Falling, 2002, Jason Benjamin

Oil on canvas, 122cm x 122cm
Provenance: Private collection, Sydney. Leonard Joel Fine Art, Melbourne. Private collection, Melbourne. Artemis Auctions, Melbourne.

One of Australia’s best regarded young artists, Jason Benjamin describes his landscapes as “romanticised versions of reality” and dreads being called a “photo-realist” painter, even though he does use photographs as reference points. He combines the romantic tradition and love, with the Australian landscape as a primary inspiration. Excellently drawn subjects, beautifully painted tones and rich, mood-inducing colours typify Benjamin’s canvases. Benjamin is a multiple Archibald Prize finalist, with an extensive exhibiting career (1).
