Provenance: Deutscher and Hackett, Melbourne. Mossgreen, Melbourne.
John Cullinane paints semi-realistic pieces, using his 30 years of sketchbooks as inspiration - sketchbooks containing a wide variety of interests from philosophy to Greek mythology to the everyday contemporary society. He pulls these interests into a single canvas to present a complex combination of ideas. He notes that "This self referential approach allows for an exploration of the formal values of fine art, and at the same time using so called 'formal flaws' by maintaining a binary subjective / objective freedom in subject matter that comes from a multitude of sources including mythology, sociology, philosophy and my own personal view as an observer”. Cullinane has been exhibited widely and is held in many public and renowned private collections (1).
