A leading figure of the Lockhart River ‘Art Gang’, a collection of young Aboriginal artists from the east coast of Cape York, Rosella Namok describes herself as a ‘modern artist’. Her paintings engage traditional themes explored in her own distinctive, and undoubtably modern style. Namok’s works explore stories about the people around her, physical and natural environments, weather patterns, as well as her Ungkum community. The everyday titles of her paintings tether the abstracted imagery to the figurative ‘real world’, with all of its tensions and disharmonies. (1)
These pieces were created as part of an exhibition of twelve large works providing a window into life at Lockhart River on the east coast area of Cape York. Aankum artist Rosella Namok paints her country and tells stories of traditional Aboriginal culture in her own distinctive and very contemporary style. Her joyful, close observation making for a beautiful celebration of land and sea and culture. (2)
