Carving
Provenance: Tiwi Art Network, Parap.

Mario Munkara is a Tiwi Island visual artist who works with local timbers to create ceremonial sculptures. His Pukumani Poles, spears and other carvings are painted with totem designs unique to his skin group. Munkara particularly carves birds, which have deep ceremonial significance to the Tiwi People, as they are seen to provide teachings from the spirit world (1).
